I figured the reason why no one ever discusses politics on this listserv was because it would be like preaching to the choir. I have yet to meet a die-hard Republican that attends art galleriy openings. But if there is one.....I'd love to hear their reasoning! Happy Independence Day!

Actually, I know quite a few Republicans that go to art galleries and museums. Some of them buy art, too. But mostly they are disgusted with Bush and either won't vote at all or will vote for Kerry. (I do get out of my close circle of art and academic friends occasionally!) Several friends who are business types (the ones who aren't Democrats) are actually worried about what Bush's economics are doing to this country and have taken it upon themselves to persuade their colleagues to vote for Kerry. And got a feature story on Democracy Now yesterday. They did a nice job with it, you can download the audio. Really gave a sense of this poor guy's wife dying, and then in the middle of this tragedy he gets totally shaken down.

I am glad this is getting a lot of coverage, but the art angle is definitely helping them. I hope it brings to light the larger circle of rights violations that is happening. There are thousands, literally, of other equally tragic stories stemming from the Patriot Act that are not getting any attention at all.

(reposted from elsewhere)

Well, .... and I saw 911, and discussed it standing outside the theater under the marquee, avoiding the rain which was gonna splatter us. We concluded discussions over eggs and a stack at the Golden Nugget at Lincoln and Barry at 2 am.

I was disappointed, perhaps especially since this film is not going to change anyone's mind, they are just going to dismiss it. It becaomes dismissable because there is just too much mockery, too many topics broached and not concluded, too much unsupported voice-over.

There were good points: it is still entertaining, despite the gruesomeness on occasion. I particularly like the desparate efforts at reading the Patriot Act from an ice cream truck, and attempts at getting Congressmen to look at enlistment materials for their sons and daughters -- but then, as a visual artist I'm all about looser attempts like that. It is the fun of the intellectual gesture, not the ultimate effect (modestly suggested to be of zero impact).

I liked some of the visuals, I hated some. The blank screen during the sound replay of the WTC attack was appropriate, but much too long. The serendipitous investigation by the secret service in front of the Iraq embassy was great. But Moore didn't think fast enough, for I think he should have pulled out a business card -- the ultimate business weapon under the circumstances. Oh well.

The most effective was the run of happy kids at play in Bagdad, just before the bombs started to explode. Of course it didn't show any of Saddam's repression.. but you suddenly got the feeling that you would know why the Iraqis hate us so much, and will spontaneously and without plan just attack and kill the invaders.

If the visuals had that effect, it may be because we don't do bullshit sniffing with images. We do it with text and verbal information. They only thing I would accept was Moore's conclusion - that the war was being waged against the poor people of this nation. Most of the other allegations might be true, but many of them came off as mere suggestions and allegations.

Any comments? /jno

Sure there are flaws, but this film would be important and wonderful even if it was only 3 minutes long and contained just one bit of footage that I had never seen or heard about anywhere else before: the images of people on the verge of rioting during Bush's inauguration parade and pelting his limo with eggs while the driver hits the gas and Secret Service do the hundred yard dash.

Who knew this happened?! No one I have spoken to heard a word about this at the time. That one scene helps to show the world how much so many Americans have despised our goddamn President from day one. In general I think the film will help undo some of the global hatred of the American people that Bush has caused - but that one scene in particular is priceless.

But you ask why we don't see this stuff in the regular press. There is a rule in the press that people behaving disrespectfully do not get credit for their actions. How many baseball games have I been to where a streaker holds up the game for ten minutes and the people at home just think its an extended commercial break? Well, the number is several.

And again, it averages out. There were idiots doing this sort of thing to Clinton as well. I'm glad the press doesn't waste my time with it. I watch Fox news at nine and there is barely enough airtime for the cheerleader and puppy rescue stories as it is.

Thank you, Master of the obvious, but this is not what I said. We all know lots of people like Bush but dissent is widely under-reported - especially during a war, and I think the film offers a bit of a corrective. It will have a wide reach in offering this corrective as it plays in theaters all over the place and hits the bootleg market in Iraq and all that good stuff.

Perhaps you haven't seen the film, which is totally fine, but this has nothing at all to do with streakers. It had to do with THOUSANDS of people protesting Bush stealing the election. There is a considerable difference and given the enormous scale of the protest, it should have been newsworthy.

Ok, let's use baseball for a second. I was at the White Sox's game when the ump got tackled by a drunk (Cub's) fan a year or two back. Although it most likely was not on live TV. Tape of that event was all over the local and national news for days. I believe Walter Jacobson gave his two cents on FOX.

Marc, the major networks did report on the demonstrations. I clearly remember Peter Jennings mentioning them. Did it get major coverage? Did we see the footage that M. Moore has? A solid NO to both. The alt. press was all over it as well. I remember Amy Goodman talking a s---load about it.

I agree that 9/11 is a pep rally. Of course, I'm rooting for the same team as M. Moore (at least I think...nader?....) I really liked that he used a Republican tactic of propaganda to get his opinions across. At least the source of his info is credible He culls the info from major newspapers and government papers, but draws his own conclusions. The one historical event that really freaked me out was when the black/asian caucus from the house where trying to open up the election for debate on the senate floor during a joint session. All they needed was one senator to speak up. Not one utter a word (was it 49 democrats senators at that time?)...poor loser Gore had to moderate....outside of c-span, I doubt that event was on any other news outlets.

What is even moore entertaining is reading the Tribune and Wallstreet Journal editorials while listen to Democracy Now and seeing 9/11. Now that's fun!

Then why was Clinton on TV every night because he behaved badly, yet we have to pay $10 to see a movie just to learn that the Bushies are Saudi whores?

I, too was disappointed with Moore's movie, mainly because if the majority of that stuff was news to you, or shocking, then you haven't been paying attention to what s been going on around you for the past 4 years.

I don't think the movie will change people from being Republican to voting for the Johns, but it may discourage some from voting. We have moved away from trying to attract swing voters, in large part because the President sent many of them to their death over in Iraq, to trying to discourage the other side from having enough pride and confidence to vote.

This country is so divided I sincerely believe that if Bush steals another election all hell will break loose. I used to think the turmoil of the 60s looked interesting and exciting....I never imagined just the prospect of it would look so depressing and frightening.

I also believe that a lot of people support Bush because they are frightened and scared to death of any change since there has been so much in the past 4 years, and would rather trust he devil they know than the one they don't. Or some cliche like that....

og's

On the political-9/11 tip, has anyone seen Control Room?

I'm sure Moore could have gone much deeper with the plot of F 911. The banking systems used by both he Bush's and the Saudi's for example, that run through Florida and off the coast in the Keys. Very important info, but probably way too deep for many people. Too PBS perhaps. He walked a fine line of edutainment. Did anyone notice that two of the major networks have put out commercials for their "news programs" that will be digging into the Bin Laden family two-step out of the states after 9/11? They have known about it for two years now, but suddenly decided to run the stories? Chalk that up to Moore. Most importantly, this type of thing relieves me when I wonder if middle and southern america will ever see F911. They probably won't, but if Barbara Walters or Dateline finds the cojones to start talking about these topics--that will reach them.

Aside from that, I don't know if I can vote for a president and vice president who have the same first name.

as for art... I just saw Larry Sultan's new show. Pretty good stuff. There is something mischievous about being a gallery, with all different kinds of people, looking at photographs from porn sets. They were very funny and mundane at the same time, which made them all the funnier. One in particular is of a guy (one of the actors) buck naked leaning over the kitchen sink just sort of dreamily staring out the window.

A gossip blurb in the new Coagula: Chris Burdens "entire legacy is safely contained in and surpassed by the movie Jackass. Dude, you had yourself shot? You crucified yourself to a Beetle? Cool man. We did shit like that on MTV and made a hundred million."

One last thing. Is spit archival or not?

I agree. Did anyone see the clip of Moore on a daytime news show? He turned around the interviewer's questions and accused the interviewer of propaganda for not asking more serious questions of the President. Incidentally, I saw the clip on the Daily Show. What is it about the recent phenomena of fake news shows and pseudo documentaries offering an honest approach to journalism? Is objectivism dead, and anyone who attempts to feign a neutral viewpoint immediately suspected of lying?

Also, are there any idiots here who plan to vote for Nader? (this ought to get a discussion going....) I mean, I like the guy and he has a lot of good points, but if there EVER was a time I could vote for a pair of Johns and a ketchup heiress, its THIS year! I m so distressed I disowned my sister just for suggesting she was going to support Bush.

Finally, did anyone ever know Laura Bush accidentally ran a stop sign when she was younger and killed a class mate of hers? Is that a sick injustice, or what?! If her husband had been governor at the time, and she wasn't white, he probably would have had to put her to death. Gotta love Texas, huh? Here is one link of the story:

--------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Address AutoComplete - You start. We finish.

And this all seems to come full circle.

Laura bush did run a stop sign and a friend was killed, but

(dot dot dot)

Note, the victim was driving an early sixties Corvair. As you all probably know, no one would have ever heard of Ralph Nader were it not for his campaign against this car and his book, Unsafe at Any Speed, in which he outlined a Detroit conspiracy to sell cars that the engineers knew were people killers.

By this logic, the murderer in Corvair accidents was Chevrolet, not inexperienced, stop-sign-running drivers. Had Laura's victim been in a 62 Scamp or a 59 Comet, he certainly would have been fine.

I'm not suggesting that Laura deserves defense (although I understand she bakes a fine pie), rather, I am conjecturing that maybe, just maybe there was a certain family in a state that once considered itself a nation that had an incentive to see that 1965 book written. Maybe conscience and research weren't the only reasons for Nader's action. Maybe there was some sort of payment or quid pro quo made. Of course there is the fact the Laura was not a Bush at the time, but those old-money family relationships can go back generations and there is evidence of a time machine.

(dot dot dot)

But wait, we're all objective. Lets step away from Laura for a second. Who else wouldn't want the Corvair produced? It was a small econocar in an era of big tail finned gas guzzlers. It was inexpensive fun to drive and appealed to the coveted 18-34 market. What would happen if all of a sudden the taste maker demographic all started coveting small gas sipping cars? What industry would be hurt by this? Who else might have an incentive to eliminate the Corvair?

(dot dot dot)

Who's the Bush whore?

Curt
